If you have ever sent an embarrassing message or perhaps answered the wrong person because you had multiple open chat threads, this one is for you.
Previously, Facebook Messenger users have always been able to delete a message from their own Facebook Messenger. But what most people don't know is that the message was only deleted from their own side of Facebook. The person who received the message can still see it because it wasn't deleted from their side of Facebook.
For a Facebook Message to totally disappear, both users would have to delete it from their Messenger. As the sender, you would have to rely on good faith that the other person deleted their copy of your message.
But that's all going to change now.
Facebook announced its newest Messenger feature - the "Unsend" button. This feature will allow users to unsend any SENT message, which deletes it from both users Messenger -- but the "sending" user only has 10 minutes to act so it is erased forever from both Messengers.
To be clear, when it is deleted from your end, it is also deleted from the receiver's end.
On Facebook's WhatsApp, the receiver sees a message saying "this message was deleted." Although it is highly likely that Facebook will use a similar notification, Facebook has yet to announce exactly what notification users will see when a message has been deleted.
Not all users in every country will have this feature available to them yet. Eventually Facebook plans to roll it out to all users.
If all your friends have the "unsend" button and you don't, please check the version of your Facebook App to see if it needs to be updated to the newest version. Updating Facebook to its newest version will make sure your Messenger is up to date.
